• Sample Page

This is an example page. It’s different from a blog post because it will stay in one place and will show up in your site navigation (in most themes). Most people start with an About page that introduces them to potential site visitors. It might say something like this:

Hi there! I’m a bike messenger by day, aspiring actor by night, and this is my blog. I live in Los Angeles, have a great dog named Jack, and I like piña coladas. (And gettin’ caught in the rain.)

    …or something like this:

The XYZ Doohickey Company was founded in 1971, and has been providing quality doohickeys to the public ever since. Located in Gotham City, XYZ employs over 2,000 people and does all kinds of awesome things for the Gotham community.

  • Off Road Trails 101

Be nervous. Have butterflies. Get excited.

That’s what an adventure vacation -especially an off road adventure vacation- is all about. If you don’t feel a little revved up, something’s wrong.

    trail101poloroid

But don’t be intimidated. ATV trail riding really is pretty easy, if you know just a couple of ins-and-outs. Anyone can do it (we believe everyone should do it.) And don’t forget, all of our tours are guided so you’ll have an expert along to lead you along the way.  Here’s some basics to get you familiar with trail riding:

    • Trails are two-way traffic unless otherwise marked. Watch out for smiling, muddy riders coming the other way.
    • Off road riding is about terrain, not speed. Be ready for, um, “bumps” in the road, and be able to stop at all times.
    • Ride within your ability. An adventure vacation is about how much fun you can have, not how big you can go. Besides, waiting for someone to pull your ATV out of a ditch is no fun (and pretty expensive)
    • Helmets must be worn at all times while your ATV is in motion. Your head is the most valuable part about you, and we want to help keep it that way.
    • Wear exactly what you’d think to wear: long pants, sturdy shoes, and long sleeves. We recommend gloves, too (and we just happen to have them for sale if you need ‘em).
    • Have fun. Yell, yahoo, be loud, get dirty. Let loose. Everyone gets in touch with their inner off-roader a different way, but we can guarantee one thing: this part of your vacation isn’t for keeping quiet!
  • Riding Tips

Here’s where the rules of the road become the rules of theoff road. ATVs have their own set of principles. Read on and learn these basic rules of thumb.

    • MUD- Here’s how to ride through mud: Just do it. Don’t try to avoid it. And if you try to go around it, you’ll just end up making the mud hole bigger. A little bit of speed helps, too. Be ready to respond to what’s happening under the wheels, even though you can’t see it. Oh, and have fun.
    • STEEPS- When you’re faced with riding up a big hill, your most important technique is judgment. If you’re not comfortable, don’t do it. The most important part of your ATV vacation is having fun, not scaring the bejeebus out of yourself. If you go up the steeps, remember to keep your momentum up and lean forward. The ATV does the rest.
    • GOING DOWN- Slow down! That’s the first part. Make sure you have the ATV in low gear when heading down a steep trail. Using the motor to help keep your speed in control can help save your braking power.
    • SLOPING TRAILS- Lean into the hill. Lean into the hill. Lean into the hill. Do you think leaning into the hill is important? It is. You need your weight on the high side of the vehicle, and that doesn’t mean you should put your 10 pound head over there. Lean into it.
  • Rating System

We use the same rating system as every ski resorts use for their trails. The only difference is, we have a lot more rocks. You may be familiar it already, but the color code is an easy way to tell where you are, and where you want to go.

    burningbar

    greencircle

    bluesquareblackdiamond

    GREEN CIRCLE

Easy. Greens are great trails for beginners to get their 4×4 legs under them. These are touring trails, long looping roads with just enough gradient to be exciting. Expect rocks and mud, but at a beginner’s pace. Mean Greenies are a great way to see almost all 8000 acres of Burning Rock.

    BLUE SQUARE

Medium. Blue trails are for groups ready to step it up a little. The gradient on blue cruisers can vary greatly. Expect bigger rocks and obstacles for longer distances, with steep sections scattered throughout.

    BLACK DIAMOND

Hard. Black Diamond trails are for experts. Some people call them steep, but around here we call them “straight down”. Big boulders, sharp drop offs, and deep mud are what you’ll find on black trails. Expect to get stuck (that’s part of the fun for experts). Burning Rock Guided Tours are prohibited from riding on black diamond trails.

    sidemap

All of the trails are also marked on our map. The color on the map corresponds to what kind of off road riding you can expect when you’re out there.

  • Zipline

Are you someone who likes to go fast? Likes excitement? Okay, one last question…

    Do you like to fly?

If you answered yes, you’re going to be pretty amped about The Burning Rock Express Racing Zipline. This is NOT a zipline “tour”. The BR Express is a rocket of a twin zipline system that picks up so much speed, the ground below you will blur. Honest. Goggles optional.

The Express is a dual-racing zipline. Which means you can race your friends, side by side, and watch their faces as they fly just feet away from you. Think You’re ready?

    ZIPLINE
    Per Night Each Additional Guest
    MON-THUR $35
    FRI-SAT $39
    3 ZIP PACK $75
    NIGHT ZIP $25
    ADD ZIPS $25
Subject to WV State Sales Tax
Night zip starts at 7pm Friday and Saturday

    Zipline Stats

    • 2,500 feet long (a half mile!)
    • 300 foot descent (that’s a 30 story building!)
    • Speeds of 60 MPH (that’s really fast without a car around you!)
    • Zippers must weigh between 70 and 250 Lbs (that’s the rule!)

The Burning Rock Express Zipline is a one-of-a-kind experience. If you’re on a West Virginia Vacation, don’t miss it.  Be sure to wear closed-toe, heeled shoes and comfortable clothing.

Your Birthday Is Gonna Be So Fly!

No boring old birthday party for YOU!  A Burning Rock zip line party is way cooler and a lot more fun.  How fast can you go?  Race your best friend!  Who screamed the loudest?  Great idea for  tweens and teens cause they don’t like much of… well, anything.  But they’ll love zipping!  This package is also great for youth, church, and corporate groups looking for a unique activity.

    ZIP LINE BIRTHDAY PACKAGE*
$200 hour / 3rd hour 1/2 price. Includes picnic pavilion (lower deck) rental.

    * good for up to 12 kids plus 4 adults (that’s 16 total people); each additional person $25.

    Night Zipping!

Zipping by the light of the moon?  You betcha – it’s a rush!  On select Friday & Saturday nights after dark, we’ll gear you up in a LED lighted vest and wristbands then head up the mountain.  Got what it takes to step off the ledge and plunge into the darkness below?  Are those tears in your eyes from the speed of your zip or is it… fear?

  • History (Coming Soon!)

  • Hatfield McCoy

..they’d probably say something about people coming to West Virginia on vacation. Back during the Hatfield McCoy feud in the late 1800s, people just didn’t come to our part of Appalachia for recreation. And now it’s the adventure ATV capital of the mountains. Go figure.

A lot has changed.  Burning Rock’s off road trails were connected to a war zone 100 years ago.  Now, we’re an ATV playground. And what makes coming here to ride even more fun is knowing a little bit about the history of the area.

    hatfeildpoloroidraw

    The Hatfield McCoy Feud

Some people say it all started with a pig. Others say it started before that, during the civil war. One thing is certain: if there had been an ATV or two on those Hatfield McCoy trails, the whole thing would have ended a lot sooner.

West Virginia had sided with the North, Kentucky with the South during the war between the states. A river separated them (not the New River Gorge, but close). Tensions ran high between the Kentucky sided McCoys and the West Virginia sided Hatfields through the war, but settled in relative peace for 13 years after it.

Without getting into all the details, the McCoy patriarch, Ran’l McCoy, accused his brother-in-law Floyd Hatfield of stealing his pig. They eventually squared off in court, and the Hatfield side won.

That was enough to start the shooting. The McCoys retaliated. Devil Anse Hatfield, by most accounts a friendly, jovial peacemaker, was compelled to feud hard against the equally hardened McCoy clan.

The war in the West Virginia mountains lasted for almost 15 years, and left 13 people dead between the two sides. The Hatfields and McCoys now have an annual picnic in the area. Both sides get together for a day of family gathering and horse shoes.

    burningbar

    Then And Now

Who knew that the area would take off? Hatfields? McCoys? ATV manufacturers? Off road trails enthusiasts?  Visitors?

The real answer is no one. The New River Gorge was discovered by white water rafters and became a gem in the crown of recreation for the state of West Virginia.

Lucky for us. The ATV vacation is taking shape just like the white water vacation did 20 years ago. It’s hard to say, but riding the off road trails in Hatfield McCoy country here at Burning Rock is so fun, it might have stopped a feud.

    Announcements

Next Up - Thrills in the Hills! June 14-16

Please be aware the “Major Tams Trail” is our first trail to go One Way, signs are in place indicating this and we’ll be out on the weekends reminding folks of this.

We’re very excited to announce that Burning Rock, West Virginia’s own outdoor adventure park, is open! Several of our trails are still under construction and we ask all riders to please be respectful of the clearly marked signage indicating dangerous areas. Every guest, including those who had passes last year, MUST stop by the general store to sign a new waiver and take a look at which trails are currently open. Can’t wait to see you out here!

    The Major Tams Trail

This is our first “new” loop or Trunk Trail, providing scenic views of the once prominent town of Tams and taking you very near the old Tams #2 mine. This trail is the gateway to over 35 miles of trails and designed to take the entire family around a large portion of the property. Just Follow the Major Tams Blazes and you’ll be all set. For those that have been to Burning Rock before this trail incorporates some of the existing Trails along with many new sections.
